The Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) began its school resumption monitoring exercise on Monday, covering both public and private schools below the tertiary level in the state.

Mr. Remi Abdul, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, who led the monitoring team, explained that the purpose of the exercise was to assess the level of compliance with government directives on school resumption, evaluate the preparedness of teachers and learners for the new term, and ensure that schools provide a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Abdul further mentioned that the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has instructed that all public schools below the tertiary level in Lagos State must implement a universal timetable to enhance learning outcomes.

He also highlighted that, as part of efforts by the Honourable Commissioner to improve student performance in external examinations, principals and vice-principals will begin teaching in classrooms. Abdul advised them to prepare their lesson notes to ensure a smooth teaching and learning process.

Additionally, Abdul noted that public senior secondary schools would introduce early morning and afternoon lessons, which will be closely monitored by the OEQA to further enhance students’ performance, particularly in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Abdul
further stated that the Government frowns at mass promotion, “Any student that does not meet promotion requirements should not be promoted; you must not lower the standards of promotion for any student. Rather, promotion should be purely based on merit”.

Abdul emphasized that from now on, school management must not tolerate lateness or absenteeism among teaching and non-teaching staff, and anyone found guilty will face appropriate sanctions. He stressed the importance of collective effort to improve the quality of education in Lagos State.

Earlier, the Director, Monitoring and Investigation, OEQA, Mr. Kamardeen Akodu said, “We are going out to monitor this exercise to confirm if there is an improvement in the level of compliance by Schools which before now was a little above average, we also look towards
an improvement in this, those who have not complied in the past had been warned and sanctioned and we hope to see an improved compliance level this time”.

Akodu also mentioned that the exercise aims to assess how well school managers are prepared for the safety of the children, emphasizing that the government places a strong focus on safeguarding and child protection within schools.

Additionally, Akodu shared that the monitoring team would review the teaching and statutory records of schools to ensure that all essential information is documented in preparation for the new term. He noted that the exercise, which began on Monday, January 6, 2025, is scheduled to run for 10 days and will cover all six education districts in Lagos State.

The monitoring team includes Mr. Femi Ejiwunmi, the Coordinating Director for Education District I; Mr. Taofik Ajibade, the Director of the Quality Assurance Department; Mrs. Funmi Okunade, the Zonal Director for Alimosho Zone; Ms. Adepeju Adeyemi, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs, and others.

The team visited several schools in Alimosho Local Government, including Estate Junior and Senior Grammar Schools in Ipaja, Platform College in Ikola, African Church Primary Schools I and II, and Community Primary School in Meiran.
