PHOTOS: RETIRED MILITARY OFFICERS BLOCK FINANCE MINISTRY OVER UNPAID ENTITLEMENTS

On Tuesday, retired military personnel erected chairs and canopies to block the Ministry of Finance’s entrance in Abuja, asking that their long-overdue benefits be fully paid.

This demonstration comes after a similar one in December, when the retirees closed the ministry because the administration had not resolved their grievances.

Although the retirees had received formal approval for payment, they were informed for months that there was insufficient money to clear their obligations. They are due a pay raise of 20% to 28% for January through November of 2024.

A refund of pension deductions from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers, an additional N32,000 added to their pensions, a bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, and palliatives for the months of October 2023–November 2024 are among the other unpaid benefits that the retirees are demanding be paid.

The Federal Government committed to settle the remaining amount after paying half of the entitlements that were due in response to their protests in December.

The pensioners have resumed their protests, however, because they believe the government has not lived up to its commitment.

The retirees at the ministry in Abuja blocked the gate with chairs and canopies, so preventing employees from entering the building and forcing them to park their cars outside.
