POLICE DENY RELEASE OF MURDER SUSPECT IN BORNO, PROMISE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION
The Borno State Police Command has denied allegations circulating on social media that the Divisional Police Officer of Hawul Police Division unlawfully released a murder suspect.
This clarification follows claims made by the Marama Community Development Association regarding the case of one James Musa, a 24-year-old man implicated in the death of a local security guard.
In a press statement dated January 7, 2025, the Command described the allegations as “misinformed” and stressed the need to set the record straight.
According to the police, the incident occurred on December 17, 2024, at around 7:30 am, when James Musa allegedly trespassed into Government Secondary School, Marama, Hawul Local Government Area, and attempted to remove the school flag.
The school’s security guard, Henry Madu, 56, confronted Musa, prompting a violent reaction.
“The suspect went berserk, attacked the security guard with stones and a long iron rod about 4 inches in length, causing a severe head injury to the security guard,” the statement explained.
In an attempt to assist Madu, two bystanders, Hassan B. Mshelia and Heledi Paul, were also attacked by Musa and sustained injuries.
Responding to a distress call, the DPO and his team promptly intervened, disarming and arresting Musa.
“The three victims were rushed to General Hospital Biu for treatment,” the Command noted.
Tragically, on December 26, 2024, Henry Madu succumbed to his injuries. The other two victims were discharged after receiving medical care.
The press release on Tuesday night clarified that Musa was never released by the DPO, as claimed by the Marama Community Development Association.
“In view of the gravity of the offence and in compliance with standard investigation procedure, the suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Maiduguri, along with the exhibits recovered, for discreet investigation and transparent prosecution,” the Command stated.
Expressing surprise at the allegations, the police asserted their commitment to upholding justice.
“It is therefore surprising that the Marama Community Development Association, who claim to represent the Marama Community, would make such an unfounded allegation against the police,” the statement read.
The Command urged calm and reassured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted according to the law.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Police Command, signed off the release, reaffirming the police’s dedication to protecting the rights of citizens.
“The Command wishes to inform the Marama Community Development Association that it remains resolute in protecting the rights of citizens and calls for calm, as the case will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Daso concluded.
