SIXTEEN GAS EXPLOSION SURVIVORS UNDERGOING TREATMENT AT RSUTH – RIVERS HEALTH COMMISSIONER
The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, or RSUTH, is currently treating sixteen survivors of the Oroazi gas explosion that occurred in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
This was corroborated by Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the state commissioner for health, who stated that the victims had burns of various intensities, with several in serious condition.
Oreh gave the public the assurance that every effort is being made by the Ministry of Health to guarantee the lives and recovery of those who are impacted.
“A couple of days ago, we unfortunately experienced a gas explosion in the Oroazi area of the state, and there were numerous casualties.
“In fact, we are currently managing up to 16 of the patients that arose from that explosion at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
“They have varying degrees of burns, and thankfully, we have a highly specialized burns unit at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital that is providing expert, advanced-level care to the patients.”
She added: “While we in health are doing our utmost to ensure the survival of those who were transferred to our facility from the site, we are still going further to engage directly with other relevant ministries to ensure that clear guidelines are communicated to the public so that the lives of the people of the state are always protected.”
The explosion, which happened on Saturday close to Oroazi’s Big Tree axis, damaged surrounding structures and claimed multiple lives.
Among the dead were a spouse, four children, and a pregnant woman.
According to reports, a welder fixing a refrigerator was the source of the explosion.
