Five survivors sustained severe injuries after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, while attempting to confront the terrorists.

Gwoza was hitherto declared a Boko Haram territory before it was liberated by troops some years ago.

It is located in Southern Borno senatorial district, where Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume hails from.

Recall that Senator Ndume had in the last two days lamented the renewed Boko Haram attacks on communities in his constituency.

The communities include Mandara Mountain, Damboa, Biu’s Mandaga Girau, as well as parts of Ngulde and Ngwahi in Askira/Uba local government area; Wajirko village in Damboa.

Recall last week’s attack on Sabon Gari of Damboa Local Government Area, where six soldiers were killed. The Defence Headquarters also confirmed that about 34 terrorists were killed during the encounter.

A source told Vanguard: “Some terrorists attacked the victims at the outskirt of Gwoza town around the axis of Yamtake-Izge-Damboa Road on Thursday morning.”

Another source revealed that “the renewed cases of onslaught by terrorists was not unconnected with the lack of functional Tucano airstrike jets and military attack helicopters in the whole of the North East Theatre Command ‘Operation Hadin KAI’ as obtained in the past”.

Some residents of Gwoza and relatives of victims, who did not want to be mentioned, informed that Gwoza people were into mourning since morning after the incident.

They called on the security agencies to do the needful by protecting lives and properties in the affected area.

All efforts to get confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso proved abortive at pres time.
