ABUSIVE TEACHER IS A SSCE HOLDER – NBA INDEPENDENT REPORT

It has been revealed that the abusive teacher, Stella Nwadigo is a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) holder, and a widow with adult children.

This was contained in a report of an independent investigation conducted by the Nigeran Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu Branch and made available to Hotjist.com.

The report further added that “Christ Mitots School was established and duly registered with the Ministry of Education on March 9, 2010.

“The teaching staff comprises qualified professionals with B.Sc. (Ed), NCE, and equivalent credentials.”

Stella Nwadigo was seen in a viral video to have abused three-year-old, Abayomi Michael, whose mother is a teaching staff at Christ-Mitots School. Abayomi’s mother, also a widow and an NCE holder, is a nursery teacher at the same school.

Carried Out by the Domestic Violence, Child’s Rights, and Persons Living with Disabilities Committee

Intervention in the Case of Alleged Child Abuse by a Teacher at Christ Mitots School, Ikorodu

The NBA Ikorodu Branch Committee on Domestic Violence, Child’s Rights, and Persons Living with Disabilities (DVCRPWD), as part of its mandate, intervened in the widely publicized case involving allegations of abuse by a teacher on a 3-year-old pupil, Michael Abayomi, at Christ Mitots School, Ikorodu.

Fact-Finding Visit to Christ Mitots School

The committee, represented by its leadership and members, visited the school to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. The delegation was warmly received by the head teacher, Mrs. Adeiga, who provided detailed accounts of the events that led to the arrest of the accused teacher.

During the interaction, the following key points emerged:
1. School Background:
Christ Mitots School was established and registered with the Ministry of Education on March 9, 2010.

The school is managed by Rev. A.A. Olutoye and Mrs. O.N. Olutoye.

The teaching staff comprises qualified professionals with B.Sc. (Ed), NCE, and equivalent credentials.

2. The Accused Teacher:
The accused is a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) holder who has worked with the school for 14 years.

She is a widow with adult children.

3. Incident Details:
The alleged abuse was captured on video by a fellow teacher, who failed to intervene, report the incident to the school authorities, or caution the accused.

The victim, Michael Abayomi, is a pre-school pupil who turned 3 in October 2024. His mother, also a widow and an NCE holder, is a nursery teacher at the same school.

4. School’s Response:
The head teacher emphasized that the school has always prioritized professional standards and organized periodic staff training.

The school management temporarily closed operations to allow for calm and to facilitate investigations.

The committee was informed that the case had been transferred to the Gender Unit at the Ikeja Divisional Police Station. Following the school visit, the committee inspected the school’s facilities to assess their suitability for learning.

Subsequently, the committee made a courtesy visit to the Family Support Unit (FSU) and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Owutu Police Station to commend their swift response. During the visit, the DPO provided updates on the case, noting that the Commissioner of Police (CP) had taken a special interest due to the viral nature of the case.

The highlights from the engagement with the police include:

The CP directed that the case be transferred to Ikeja for thorough investigation.

The NBA Ikorodu Branch expressed its preference for the trial to take place in Ikorodu, given the jurisdiction and local interest.

The police assured the committee of transparency and diligence in handling the matter.

The NBA Ikorodu Branch, through the DVCRPWD, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and protection of his rights. The committee also pledged continued collaboration with the police and other stakeholders to prevent and address violence in the community.

The fact-finding mission concluded successfully, and the committee returned to the branch headquarters to finalize its report.
