On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the nation paused to commemorate the unparalleled patriotism and sacrifices of fallen heroes on the occasion of the 2025 Armed Forces’ Remembrance Day, creating a solemn and contemplative atmosphere in the landmark Eagle Square in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Nigeria has existed for 64 years since gaining its independence, but its survival is a result of the sacrifices made by hundreds or possibly thousands of brave soldiers who gave their lives to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

President Bola Tinubu was not present at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates, therefore Vice President Kashim Shettima spoke in his place. In addition to Shettima, other cabinet members were there to perform military rites such as the gun salute and lay wreaths in remembrance of the dead soldiers and their families.

The yearly event was attended by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police, service heads, and members of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Earlier, in a statement, the Senate commended the selfless sacrifices of the military. The upper legislative chamber also commended “serving officers and soldiers who are currently maintaining the peace and ensuring that our nation is secured and safe from internal and external aggression”.
