The two accused persons in an alleged defamation case filed by Senator Lawal Adamu (popularly known as Mr. LA) at a Kaduna Magistrate Court regained their freedom on Thursday, as the trial judge granted bail of ₦500,000 each.

The presiding judge, Agatha Goni, approved the bail application presented by the defendants’ counsel, Umar Sarki and Lawal Mai Mai. She also struck out the name of the third defendant, Nagarta Radio, a Kaduna-based radio station accused of airing the allegedly defamatory content.

Senator Lawal Adamu, representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, initiated the case against the two defendants, alleging defamation, unlawful accusations, and inflammatory statements that he claimed damaged his reputation.

The charge sheet, made available to journalists, detailed allegations of false, defamatory, and inflammatory statements aired by the radio station in the Hausa language. According to the document:

“The first defendant, Lawal Mai Mai, made defamatory statements against Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, accusing him of aligning with certain political interests and conspiring against others, knowing such accusations to be false.”

While striking out Nagarta Radio from the case, the judge scheduled the next hearing for March 4, 2025.

Counsel for the defendants, Barrister Frank Akhareghemen, criticized the absence of the complainant, Senator Adamu, in court.

“The Senator ought to have been present, considering the gravity of his allegations. The burden of proving defamation now rests on him, and we firmly believe there is no evidence to support his claims,” Akhareghemen stated.
