COURT SLATES JAN 31 FOR EX-ACCOUNTANT-GENERAL’S TRIAL IN ALLEGED N1.9BN FRAUD CASE
In a statement from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, has set January 31, 2025, as the date for the trial of Anamekwe Nnabuoku, the former Acting Accountant General of the Federation, for alleged multiple financial frauds totalling N1.96 billion.
After his co-defendant, Felix Nweke, chose to accept a plea deal, Nnabuoku was arraigned by the EFCC on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, on an amended nine-count allegation that bordered on criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
During the hearings, Martha Babatunde, the prosecuting attorney, told the court that the accusations had been changed and asked that the defendant be read the modified charges so that he might enter a plea.
When the charges were read to Nnabuoku, he entered a not guilty plea. The prosecution then asked for a trial date and prayed for the defendant to be placed under remand at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, while the defence attorney, Isidore Udenko, notified the court of the defendant’s bail application.
In a counter-affidavit to the bail request, the prosecution requested the court to reject the defendant’s bail, citing his potential for flight as justification.
However, Justice Omotosho allowed the defendant to post N500 million bail with two sureties in the same amount.
In addition, he ordered that the sureties must be owners of landed properties within Abuja and that the value of the properties should not be less than N250 million each.
The sureties, he ruled, must also depose to an affidavit of means, and submit their bank statements and tax clearance for three years, all of which would be verified by the court’s registrar. He adjourned the matter till January 31, 2025 for trial.
