The Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, Aniekan Bassey, has urged the Federal Ministry of Education to prioritize the release of the long-delayed take-off grant for the University of Uyo and ensure adequate funding for the institution in the 2025 budget.

Bassey also called for sufficient funding for the newly established Federal College of Education in Ididep, located in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The senator made these requests in a statement issued by his media team in Uyo on Wednesday, following the Senate Committee on Education’s budget defense session.

The take-off grant for UNIUYO has been unpaid since the institution’s inception 34 years ago, sparking concerns among stakeholders who have consistently urged the federal government to address the matter.

Similarly, the Federal College of Education in Ididep has not received enough funding to support the smooth start of its academic activities.

During the budget defense session, Bassey emphasized the difficulties faced by UNIUYO due to the absence of the take-off grant and other funding challenges.

He urged the Ministry of Education to prioritise disbursing these funds in the 2025 budget.

“The University of Uyo has, for years, struggled with inadequate funding despite its role in providing quality education in the South-South region. I urge the ministry to prioritize the disbursement of the UNIUYO take-off grant in the 2025 budget.

“Similarly, the Federal College of Education, Ididep, cannot thrive without the necessary federal government grants to assist in setting up the infrastructure and systems required to function effectively,” Bassey said.

The Senator, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production Services and Rural Development, stressed that proper funding would not only enhance educational development but also play a crucial role in the socio-economic advancement of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole.

He warned that inadequate funding of these institutions could impede their growth, depriving students and staff of the necessary resources for a conducive learning and working environment.

Bassey also urged the Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Lawal Adamu Usman, to engage with the Federal Ministry of Education regarding the release of the take-off grants and adequate funding for both UNIUYO and the Federal College of Education, Ididep, during future budget discussions.
