12 CONFIRMED DEAD IN KWARA MULTIPLE AUTO CRASH
Along the well-traveled Oko Olowo axis of the Ilorin-Jebba Motorway in Kwara State, a caravan and another vehicle were involved in a multiple auto accident that is said to have claimed the lives of at least 12 people.
It was learnt that a number of more people were hurt in the car accident, to differing degrees.
A caravan with the registration number AYE 218 XC collided head-on with a car with the registration number TTN 556 XA on Wednesday at around 5:35 p.m., according to eyewitness reports.
Since the accident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) state command has not released an official statement, with the exception of a confirmation obtained over the phone from a senior corps official in the state.
According to information obtained, the caravan was reportedly heading from Lagos to Kano, while one of the two trucks involved in the collision was carrying cows and human passengers from Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, to Ogbomoso, Oyo state.
While the injured people were taken to a local hospital for treatment, emergency responders and police officers from the “G” Division Police Command, Oloje, were reported to have arrived on time to take control of the situation.
According to reports, the families of the victims evacuated their bodies.
Although the exact reason of the collision is still being investigated, it was determined that excessive speeding and careless driving were factors.
Over ten bodies were strewn over the road as the truck flipped over, according to a video of the incident taken by one of the rescuers and made public.
There was a voice demanding that the government take immediate action to stop the numerous accidents on that corridor that had recently claimed a number of lives.
According to a top FRSC official in Kwara who wished to remain anonymous, three persons were hurt and fifteen people perished in the several crashes.
Speaking in a telephone chat, the FRSC Sector Commander, Muftau Irekeola, confirmed the incident, saying that, “But I am still waiting for the details from my boys in Olooru unit.”
“That we have 15 casualties may not be far from the truth but I am still waiting for details. I am waiting for the details from my boys. It was a multiple accident involving a trailer and one Canter truck,” he said.
