ABDUCTED ANAMBRA MEDICAL DOCTOR REGAINS FREEDOM
Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical doctor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, has been freed.
Onuigbo was abducted in front of his house in Nnewi while returning from work and was released in the early hours of Thursday, after spending two distressing nights in captivity.
His colleagues from the Urology Department at the hospital and Martina Onwuka, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NAUTH, confirmed the news of his release.
The circumstances of his release are unclear, including whether a ransom was paid or if he managed to escape from his captors.
News of Onuigbo’s freedom sparked celebrations at the NAUTH premises on Thursday, with staff and doctors praising God for his safe return.
A colleague from the Urology Department, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed relief at his release but also acknowledged the psychological impact the ordeal may have had on him.
“We thank God that he has been released. We are not yet sure if any ransom was paid, and we cannot confirm if he was physically hurt. However, the psychological trauma of such an ordeal is significant. The most important thing is that he has reunited with his family. We thank God for sparing his life,” the colleague said.
