
BREAKING: LAWYERS IN MGBIDI, OGUTA, OMMUMA SHUT DOWN COURTS OVER KILLING OF COLLEAGUE
Courts in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma areas of Imo State were closed on Thursday after the killing of prominent lawyer Chinedu Nwowu.
Reports indicate that Nwowu was ambushed and shot dead on Wednesday evening in Mgbidi, his hometown, by unidentified gunmen.
According to sources, armed men blocked the lawyer’s vehicle and shot him. The motive for the killing remains unclear, causing widespread panic in the state.
In response to the tragic incident, the Orlu Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, to which the deceased belonged, declared that no court sessions would take place in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma. The branch also called for an emergency meeting of its members, which is set to take place at the High Court in Mgbidi, according to a press release issued by Chukwuemeka Okoro on behalf of the branch.
The statement read; “following the gruesome murder of one of us, CHINEDU NWOWU last night in his town, Mgbidi, all lawyers of Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning by 10am at the High Court, Mgbidi.
“The Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma High Courts will not sit today. Please, be punctual.”
The NBA Chairman of the Orlu Branch, Ben Amukamara, informed our correspondent that members were already gathered at the Mgbidi High Court for a meeting in response to the incident.
He emphasized that no courts in the Oguta, Mgbidi, and Omumma areas of the state would be holding sessions.
As of the time of this report, the state’s police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, had not responded to inquiries about the lawyer’s killing.
