CELEBRATING YEAR 2025 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION
Honored Educators, respected Students, and fellow citizens,
Today, on January 24th, we observe the International Day of Education, a day designated by the United Nations to acknowledge the transformative role of education in fostering peace, development, and overall human well-being.
As we commemorate this significant day, we are reminded of the substantial challenges confronting the education system in Nigeria. Despite some progress, many of our citizens, especially the most vulnerable, continue to encounter significant obstacles in accessing quality education.
This year’s theme, “Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” holds particular significance for our situation. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology continue to influence our world, it becomes essential to prioritize education that nurtures critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and human values.
In navigating this swiftly evolving landscape, we must ensure that our education system equips learners to thrive in an era where automation and AI are becoming increasingly dominant. This necessitates a renewed emphasis on developing skills that complement technology, such as empathy, problem-solving, and collaboration.
However, the goal goes beyond preparing students for the future job market. It is about ensuring that education acts as a powerful tool for social mobility, equality, and justice. It is about affirming that education is a fundamental human right, vital for the dignity and well-being of every individual.
So, what steps should we take to promote accessible and equitable education in Nigeria? First, we must prioritize investing in our education sector, ensuring that schools are well-equipped, teachers are properly trained, and learners have access to quality learning resources.
Second, we must address the systemic inequalities that hinder many from accessing education. This includes initiatives aimed at advancing girls’ education, supporting learners with disabilities, addressing the needs of marginalized communities, and ultimately promoting Technical Education as a meaningful alternative.
Third, we must leverage technology to expand access to education, especially for those in remote or underserved areas. This involves promoting digital literacy, online learning platforms, and innovative applications of AI and other technologies.
As we observe the International Day of Education, I call on all of you to join me in advocating for inclusive, high-quality education for everyone in Nigeria. Let us use our voices to highlight the importance of education and demand action from all stakeholders to address the issues plaguing our education system.
Let us also acknowledge the vital role of educators, parents, and communities in shaping the minds and futures of our youth. Let us celebrate their dedication, hard work, and commitment to delivering quality education.
In closing, the International Day of Education serves as a call to action — a reminder that education is the key to unlocking the potential of our citizens, communities, and nation. Let us collaborate to create an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and just, one that prepares students to succeed in an ever-changing world.
