The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has encouraged the staff and teachers of Government Technical Colleges to empower and delegate responsibilities to subordinates, ensuring effective collaboration in carrying out their duties.

Alli-Balogun shared this advice in his keynote address during the opening ceremony of the annual Management Retreat hosted by the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB). The retreat, held at Novatel Hotel in Lekki, Lagos, had the theme “Technical and Vocational Training: Key to Sustainable Development.”

He emphasized the importance of officers being aligned and focused on fulfilling their responsibilities. He noted that the retreat serves as an opportunity to evaluate previous actions and set new goals and priorities for the future. He also encouraged the participants to adopt international best practices to improve technical and vocational training in Lagos State.

In response to questions from the officers, the Commissioner advised that the participants should engage in brainstorming sessions to develop a strategic plan that would help reshape the future of technical and vocational training in the state.

He reiterated that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains committed to supporting technical and vocational education, as he was impressed by the number of graduates during the 2024 graduation ceremony.

During her presentation, the Executive Secretary of LASTVEB, Ms. Moronke Azeez, urged the participants to remain focused so that the agency can achieve its goal of becoming the national leader in providing high-quality and equitable technical and vocational training in Nigeria.

Azeez highlighted the significant progress LASTVEB has made compared to previous years, especially when Technical Colleges were once viewed by the public as places for failures. She encouraged the agency’s management team to stay dedicated and work towards ensuring the success of students in technical and vocational education.

“The Lagos State Government, through LASTVEB, is dedicated to providing industry responsive and gender-inclusive technical education in Nigeria that not only creates employment opportunities but also enables self-employment,” Azeez said.

She also shared that the agency has developed several strategic plans to help LASTVEB become the national leader in delivering high-quality and equitable technical and vocational training in the country.

Azeez expressed her gratitude to the participants, particularly those who have been with the agency for several years and contributed significantly to its transformation. She urged them not to become complacent but to continue striving to make the agency a reputable leader in technical and vocational education.

“Wehave constantly received feedback that our past graduates are excelling, whether as self-employed individuals or in gainful employment with various organisations. Participants should continue to add achievements and remain focused and should also be proud of our achievements. Recently, four of our Technical Colleges in the State have been chosen to be part of the Federal Government’s CNG Conversion Centres, which is a plus for us. That means we are moving forward,” she said.

Facilitators also presented papers at the event. One of the facilitators and former Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye, spoke on “Fostering Excellence in Public Service Leadership”.

Bamgboye encouraged the participants to maintain open communication with their staff and seek feedback from them. He urged them to be creative and proactive in their roles and warned against resisting change, as it could ultimately leave them behind.
