GREENLINE PROJECT: LAGOS STATE GOVT SIGNS MOU WITH FG
The Lagos State Government has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to initiate exploratory work on the Green Line project’s development.
Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, shared this update at a recent Citizen/Media Stakeholders forum organized by the Ministry. He mentioned that the 68-kilometer Green Line, once completed, will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, passing through one of the fastest-growing industrial corridors in Africa.
He also highlighted that in 2024, the State Government completed 36 road projects, including bridges, link bridges, and pedestrian infrastructure. Additionally, he pointed out that there are over 51 other road projects in various stages of development across all five divisions of the State.
According to the government spokesperson, these ongoing projects include the Arowojobe Link Bridge and Approach Road in Mende, Maryland; Sand Zero Road in Oyingbo; Platinum Road in Igbokusu; and the Babafemi Dada Bridge, along with surrounding roads such as Yinka Folarin, Jamiu Lawal, and Shalom Academy Road Network, Samuel Ekundayo Road, and Abaranje Road.
Other projects in progress include Eluku Street/Mosafejo in Agbowa Ikosi, Adamo-Akanun-Agunfoye Lugbusi Roads, Oba Dosunmu Road in Ikeja GRA, Oduduwa Way and Oduduwa Crescent in Ikeja GRA, Sasegbon Street in Ikeja GRA, the alternative route to Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza, Sobo Arobiodu Street in Ikeja GRA, and phases IIA and IIB of the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
As part of its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), the current administration is developing new BRT bus terminals, with several projects at different stages of completion. The design and construction of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal are progressing smoothly.
Similarly, work on the Iyana Ipaja Bus Terminal is progressing well, while the Ajah Bus Terminals and Depots, along with the Addo Road Junction Improvement and Pedestrian Bridge, are nearing completion. Furthermore, the development of BRT infrastructure along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway is also advancing, with the section from Doyin Orile to Mile 2 currently under construction.
The Commissioner noted that a historic achievement was made last year with the completion and commissioning of the first phase of the 27-kilometer Red Line rail. Passenger operations for this rail line began on October 15, 2024, and it is expected to serve 500,000 passengers daily.
The first phase of the Red Line spans 27 kilometers, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos, and features eight stations at key locations: Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, and Oyingbo. The project also includes four vehicular overpasses, three pedestrian bridges, and connections with the Ikeja, Oshodi, Yaba, and Oyingbo Bus Terminals, among other features.
Omotoso further revealed that the administration plans to link the Red Line with the Blue Line and that work has already begun on the second phase of the Blue Line, which will extend from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.
