ANOTHER FUEL TANKER EXPLODES IN NIGER, DRIVER, MOTORBOY INJURED
Less than a week after a fuel tanker crash in Niger State claimed over 100 lives, another tanker carrying 40,000 litres of fuel has crashed.
While no fatalities were reported in this incident, the driver and his assistant sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
An eyewitness, identified only as Abdul, stated that the crash occurred on Monday evening when the tanker suffered a tyre burst, leading to the crash and spilling of the fuel.
The tanker, which was en route from Lagos State to Kaduna, lost control and crashed into a nearby drainage along the Agaie-Lapai Road in Niger State, causing an explosion.
The Niger State Police Commandās spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the accident on Tuesday in a WhatsApp message, said the road was temporarily closed when the incident occurred
āOn 27/1/2025 at about 6.30 pm, there was a lone fuel tanker accident with a fire explosion along Agaie/Lapai Road. The fuel tanker with Reg. No. DKA 03 A, driven by one Shamsudeen Dayabu of Matazun LGA of Katsina State on transit from Lagos to Kaduna and loaded with about 40,000 litres of PMS.
āOn reaching the Kusogbogi area of Agaie, the tanker lost control due to a busted front tyre and fell by the road into the drainage. As a result, the tanker caught fire and affected the driver on the leg and the motor boy was also affected, they were taken to a nearby hospital.
āNo life was lost during the incident as the road was temporarily closed, but normalcy was later restored for road users,ā Abiodun stated.
Itās worth recalling that the previous tanker explosion in the state took place in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area, when a fuel-laden tanker crashed on the road.
As a large number of residents gathered to scoop the spilling fuel, the tanker exploded, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people.
In response to the Dikko tragedy, the state governor, Mohammed Bago, issued several directives aimed at preventing further tanker accidents in the state.
