BAYERN’S KOMPANY STILL HOPEFUL OF TOP-EIGHT CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINISH
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany says “anything is possible” despite his team only holding a slim chance of finishing in the Champions League top eight ahead of their last league match against Slovan Bratislava at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
Bayern are sitting 15th in the new league phase and need to beat Slovan and hope other results go their way to avoid the knock-out play-off round and qualify directly for the last 16.
“We’re playing at home,” Kompany told reporters on Tuesday. “This is a special place for us and here, anything is possible…
“We’ve got no control over what happens in the other games, it’s all about our own performance.
“It won’t be an issue until late in the game, and maybe we’ll get some info that we need another goal or two, then we can take a bit more risk.”
The six-time European champions have struggled for consistency in the Champions League this season, particularly away from home, losing on the road to Aston Villa, Barcelona, and Feyenoord.
Thomas Mueller insisted comments made by his teammate Joshua Kimmich that Bayern were “no longer a top team” had been taken out of context.
“What you look at the table, I know what he meant. What’s nice in football is that you don’t need to be a top team in January but in May.”
