SULTANATE COUNCIL ASKS MUSLIMS TO WATCH FOR NEW MOON
The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has instructed the Muslim Ummah to observe the new moon of Sha’aban 1446 AH on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, which corresponds to the 29th day of Rajab 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
In a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Waziri of Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, and issued to the press on Tuesday, the council called on Muslims across the country to begin moon sighting and report any sightings to their local District or Village Head.
These sightings should then be forwarded to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for official confirmation.
The sighting of the new moon of Sha’aban is an important Islamic tradition, as Sha’aban is the month before Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting. The declaration of the new moon signals the beginning of Sha’aban and helps Muslims prepare for Ramadan.
The statement concluded with a prayer: “May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty. Amen.”
This announcement underscores the Sultanate Council’s customary responsibility in making moon sighting declarations, which help guide Muslims in following Islamic practices for religious observances.
The Muslim community is advised to stay informed through local religious leaders and official announcements from the Sultanate Council.
