On Thursday, the European Union announced the launch of solar projects aimed at providing healthcare facilities in Plateau State with continuous access to reliable electricity for medical equipment, thereby improving healthcare services for local communities.

The project, funded by the EU in collaboration with the Plateau State Government, underscores the significance of clean energy in improving the quality of life, especially in rural healthcare environments, as stated in an announcement by the EU Commission in Abuja.

“The EU has committed €1.7 million for overall project implementation by NTU International and €8.7 million for infrastructure managed by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit,” the statement said.

Speaking at the launch of the Solar for Health project, the Head of Green and Digital Economy at the EU Delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Inga Stefanowicz, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy sector through initiatives like Solar for Health.

She stated that the project marks a significant step in the partnership between the EU and Plateau State, aiming to ensure reliable and clean energy for healthcare facilities.

The project, she said, “will support a minimum of 25 healthcare facilities across the state, improving energy access and enhancing overall healthcare services.”

The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting the crucial role of energy in providing quality healthcare. He emphasized that access to energy is vital for powering life-saving equipment and ensuring the delivery of effective medical care.

“Without energy, our healthcare services are limited,” he said. “This project is a game-changer for Plateau State, and we are committed to its success.”

As part of the initiative’s launch, Governor Mutfwang inaugurated the Plateau State Solar for Health Project Steering Committee. The committee, tasked with overseeing the project’s implementation, includes representatives from the EU, GIZ, NTU International, and the Plateau State Government. The committee will be chaired by Pongzing Gambe, the Managing Director of the Plateau State Energy Corporation, with Cletus Shurkuk, the Commissioner for Health, serving as co-chair.

The Secretary to the Plateau State Government, Samuel Jatau, who was appointed chairman of the state steering committee, expressed his gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve. He assured that he and the committee members would work diligently to ensure the project’s successful execution.

The Solar for Health project is part of the larger EU Global Gateway initiative, which aims to foster investment in smart, sustainable infrastructure worldwide, covering sectors such as energy, health, and education.
