KWASU ANNOUNCES 1-YEAR SUSPENSION OF LAW ADMISSION BY JAMB
By Aishat Momoh. O.
In a significant development, the management of Kwara State University (KWASU) has confirmed that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has imposed a one-year suspension on the admission of new students into the university’s law programs. This decision follows an action by the Council for Legal Education (CLE), which sanctioned KWASU for offering law programs starting in 2018 without prior approval from the CLE, despite having the green light from the National Universities Commission (NUC).
While KWASU holds full accreditation from both the NUC and CLE for its two undergraduate law programs — Common Law and Common and Islamic Law — the university will temporarily halt new admissions into these programs for the 2025/2026 academic session, in compliance with the regulatory decision.
However, the university clarified that the suspension does not affect current students enrolled in the Faculty of Law. All existing law students will continue with their studies as scheduled without any interruptions, as their programs remain fully accredited.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, the university emphasized its deep respect for regulatory bodies and its commitment to adhering to the sanctions imposed by the CLE. Dr. Aliyu reassured prospective candidates interested in KWASU’s law programs that the university continues to offer a wide range of other accredited programs across various disciplines.
“While this suspension temporarily affects the law programs, prospective students are encouraged to explore other excellent programs at KWASU, all of which are fully accredited,” Dr. Aliyu said.
KWASU management expressed its commitment to rectifying the situation and ensuring that future admissions into the law programs comply with all relevant legal and regulatory guidelines.
The university’s swift compliance with the sanctions highlights its ongoing dedication to upholding the highest academic and regulatory standards in its operations.
