FOUR KILLED IN ANAMBRA ROAD CRASH, FRSC BLAMES ROUTE VIOLATION
The Federal Road Safety Corps has attributed the accident involving the Anambra State Special Anti-Tout Squad and a tipper in Idemili South Local Government Area to a route violation.
Four operatives of the squad lost their lives, while others sustained injuries after their vehicle collided with a sand-filled tipper.
The crash involved three vehicles: a private Toyota Hummer bus (registration number UWN763XA), a government-owned Toyota Hummer bus (without a registration number), and a Mercedes Benz tipper.
The incident occurred on Friday along the Onitsha-Owerri Road near New Road Junction in Oba. Reports indicate that the Toyota bus crashed into the tipper as it exited a junction during a routine stop-and-search operation.
In a statement on Friday, Margaret Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer for the Anambra State Sector Commander, confirmed that the accident was caused by a route violation, leading to a head-on collision.
She further revealed that five male adults were involved in the crash, with four fatalities and one survivor who sustained injuries.
She said, “The rescue operation was carried out by Anambra State Anti-tout personnel. The Federal Road Safety Corps team is currently managing traffic, and the crashed vehicles have been cleared from the road, allowing for a smooth flow of traffic.
“It is important to note that the FRSC rescue team was initially hindered in performing their duties due to an attack by local youths from the Oba community who claimed the crash was caused by certain people and insisted representatives of those people before any rescue could be done. The team had no option but to leave but returned after the police and other armed agencies arrived.
“The Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased victims.”
Onabe cautioned motorists against dangerous driving and route violations, particularly on the expressway.
She also urged the public to cooperate with FRSC teams during rescue operations and road clearance, emphasizing that any delays could result in further loss of lives.
