KEMI BADENOCH PROMISES TO MAKE IT HARDER FOR IMMIGRANTS TO OBTAIN BRITISH CITIZENSHIP
The leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has pledged to make it harder for immigrants to obtain British citizenship.
In one of her first policy statements since assuming leadership, Badenoch announced that immigrants would need to live in the UK for 15 years before being eligible to apply for citizenship.
She also stated that indefinite leave to remain, which is a step towards citizenship, should not be granted to individuals with criminal records or those who have claimed benefits or social housing.

According to her, citizenship was a privilege, not just a right and should only be for those with a “meaningful connection to the UK”.
Obtaining indefinite leave to remain, ILR gives people the right to live, work and study in the UK.
A person can typically apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after working in the UK for a minimum of five years, although this period may be reduced to two or three years depending on the type of visa they entered the UK with.
