President Bola Tinubu has praised former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, calling him an exemplary leader who has made significant contributions to the country’s growth and development.

The President offered the tribute during an event in Abuja on Thursday, marking Fayemi’s 60th birthday and the official launch of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement.

In attendance were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; ex-Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; his counterpart in Ekiti, Biodun Oyebanji; Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido; the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun; and former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, among others.

Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also urged past and present political leaders to emulate him by setting aside their differences and working for the common good of Nigerians.

He said, “I urge you, including this esteemed gathering and intellectuals, irrespective of political differences and affiliations, to work together. What binds us together supersedes the interests that can divide us. I beg you in the name of God. Let us unite for a common good for our people.

“The world has never suffered from a scarcity of ideas. Nations and civilizations have risen on the strength of visionaries, and they have also crumbled under the weight of ideas left in the dusty cupboard of time. But today, the world as we know it is bowing to a reality in which we cannot afford to be freeloading bystanders.

“As we honour the Fayemis, let us channel their restlessness. Let this symposium be remembered not for its eloquence but for its ignition. The Amandla Institute must become a command center for the continent, turning thinkers into doers, policies into progress, and Pan-African ideals into lived realities.”

Gowon also shared his sentiment when he took over the podium.

The former head of state said he was excited to note that leaders like Fayemi, who have served the country in various capacities, could still be thoughtful of establishing a Pan-African institute to discuss issues that plagued the country and the continent at large.

“As a statesman who has witnessed Nigeria’s journey through various phases, I am delighted to see a new generation of leaders like Dr. Fayemi and his dear wife, who embody the values of integrity, compassion, and selfless service.

“His leadership as Governor of Ekiti State and Minister of Mines and Steel Development has been exemplary, and I am confident that this Institute will be another feather in his cap. As I look back on my own life and legacy, I am reminded of the importance of perseverance, hard work, and dedication to the service of our great nation.

“I congratulate Fayemi on this milestone birthday and the launch of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement. I urge each of you here today to join us in this noble cause. Your support will be invaluable as we strive to create a brighter future for generations to come,” he urged.

Similarly, Oyebanji described his predecessor as a noble personality and a great mentor.

The Ekiti governor also assured that he would continue to build on his legacy.

He said, “We are building on the achievements my predecessor has laid down. Let me say here that we love you and wish you the best. We are sure that your best is yet to come.

“Sir, on behalf of your mentees, we say thank you. You are a benefactor and have been a good leader, mentor and brother. Let me also say that 60 looks good on you.”

The former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, also hailed Fayemi, describing him as an innovative leader.

“I commend his commitment and his intentionality about the progress of Nigeria. You don’t need to have a privileged conversation with JKF because he is constantly thinking of how things can be better.

“I think we need more people like him to give solutions for our country. I may not say much about the institute being launched today. But I can say anything by Fayemi will be done well. I think what we need for now is where do we move from here,” she stated.
