TWO DEAD, OTHERS INJURED IN BENUE CULT CLASH
The police in Benue State have confirmed that two people died in a clash between rival cult groups in the Wadata area of Makurdi, the state capital, on Sunday.
The confrontation is said to have started near the riverside in Wadata, where the cult groups had assembled for a meeting.
According to the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, “Due to the police crackdown on cultism in the state, some cultists travelled to the riverside to hold a meeting.
“On getting there, they encountered a rival cult group, which led to a clash in which two people lost their lives.”
Anene confirmed that five suspects have been arrested and assured that more details would be provided later.
Earlier reports indicated that four individuals were killed, with many others suffering gunshot and axe wounds.
An eyewitness told our correspondent on Monday that the violence erupted when rival cult groups, known as the Red and Black confraternities, clashed in a battle for dominance, resulting in four fatalities.
The witness, who identified himself as Aboh, explained that the conflict started on Sunday morning when a member of the Red Confraternity had a heated argument with a member of the Black Confraternity, which escalated into a fight.
He mentioned that the situation worsened, and by the time it was over, two people were found dead by the riverside.
Aboh further stated that another individual, along with his neighbor, Emeka, was also killed on Sunday evening at the Wadata Police Barracks in Makurdi, possibly in a retaliatory attack by the opposing group.
He said, “Yesterday evening, we were attending a meeting at the police barracks in Wadata when some of the cult boys traced Emeka to the venue, attacked, and killed him. They then proceeded to the rice mill and killed another person.
“The victims were all my friends. I was even calling one of them on the phone to come and see what was happening, only to hear that he was among those killed.”
