POLICEMAN HELD IN CUSTODY FOR ALLEGEDLY RAPING TEENAGER INSIDE LAGOS OFFICE
Owolabi Akinlolu, 56, a police officer, was remanded to the Maximum Correctional Centre Kirikiri on Tuesday by an Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos State for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in his office.
When the survivor promised to assist recover her phone, which had been snatched by chance robbers when she was returning from Ikeja with her grandmother and siblings, Owolabi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, allegedly raped her in his office.
On June 29, Akinlolu allegedly called the adolescent to his office and said they had caught the person who had stolen her phone two weeks prior.
The senior police officer allegedly raped the adolescent after locking his office door behind him when he arrived at the police station.
Mrs. Aramide Olupona, the survivor’s mother, accused the police in July 2024 of trying to hide the case. She disclosed that the suspect’s wife and family had begged her to drop the charges because Akinlolu was scheduled to retire in December 2024.
Supported by a seven-paragraph document, the prosecution’s attorney asked the Magistrate Court 11 on Tuesday to remand the defendant, arguing that the offense of defilement is a violation of Section 137 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law.
Magistrate O.O. Fagboun granted the prosecution’s request and remanded the defendant to the Maximum Correctional Center. The case was postponed until March 11, 2025, for trial and additional proceedings.
