The Ogun State Police Command has successfully rescued seven individuals from a suspected human trafficking syndicate in the Oja-Odan area of Yewa North Local Government Area.

According to reports, the police intercepted a white Volkswagen bus along the Oja-Odan/Ohunbe Road on Monday, February 12, 2025. The vehicle, bearing registration number KRD 28 YL and marked as property of the Anambra State Government, was driven by Ezeani John Paul, a resident of Ichida, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed on Friday that the driver and several passengers had been arrested and detained for further investigation.

The police revealed that the victims were allegedly being transported to the Republic of Gambia before security operatives intervened.

According to the command, the rescued victims include Emmanuel Anyigor (25), John Peter Ogar (18), Chidioke Basil (20), Emecheta Chimaodi (18), Osondu Marvellous (19), Ifeanyi Emmanuel Uchechukwu (18), and Anizoba Chiagozie Emmanuel (18).

Odutola stated, “When questioned, the occupants were reportedly unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding their journey to the Republic of Gambia, raising suspicions of human trafficking.

“Following the discovery, the driver and passengers were apprehended by security personnel. Investigations into the case are ongoing, and authorities have stated that all suspects, along with the intercepted vehicle, will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further enquiries.”

Odutola added that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious to avoid falling victim to criminal activities.

She said, “The CP, through his daily public enlightenment efforts, encourages state residents to stay vigilant and exercise caution. He emphasised that many crime victims could have avoided being targeted by taking basic personal security precautions.

“He further advised everyone in the state to be proactive about their security and take steps to prevent becoming easy targets for criminals.”
