Approximately 37,000 runners are expected to participate in the 10km and 42km races of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, taking place today (Saturday), according to the organisers.

Yusuf Ali, the race’s General Manager and a retired Nigerian long jumper, explained that this number is based on the running kits distributed out of the more than 60,000 registered participants.

The 42km race will kick off at 6:30 am from the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, while the 10km race will begin at 9:30 am from the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki. Both races will conclude at Eko Atlantic City.

Now in its 10th edition since its inception in 2016, the marathon holds a World Athletics gold label, with organisers aiming for a platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to achieve this status.

Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management—the event organisers—highlighted that the next decade will be crucial in transforming the marathon into a globally recognized event.

We are incredibly proud to have earned the gold label but we are not stopping here. We have set our sights on achieving the platinum label thereby making Lags home to the biggest and most prestigious marathon in Africa. This means a stronger position for Lagos and all our sponsors and partners,” Olopade said during the pre-race press conference in Lagos on Friday.

Lekan Fatodu, the General Manager of the Lagos State Sports Commission, also stated that , “As a state, we are using this as an opportunity to rededicate our commitment to sporting excellence and to promoting and supporting initiatives that will not just foster unity but will also give our people the opportunity to be productive.”

The Lagos State Government has announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along specific routes for the race, scheduled to take place from 5 am to 1 pm.
