Taiwan’s Head of Mission in Nigeria and Chief of Taiwan’s Mission at the Taipei Trade Office, Andy Liu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure the relocation of Taiwan’s Mission in Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Liu also urged the Federal Government to sign the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement which has been under discussion between both countries.

He emphasised that the agreement would enhance bilateral relations and foster socioeconomic growth.

Liu said, “Taiwan welcomes the Nigerian Federal Government’s approach to renew the bilateral Agreement for Investment Protection and Promotion, and we are ready to sign for renewal, together with our counterpart Nigerian mission in Taiwan. This renewal signing will greatly encourage investors interested in visiting and investing in Nigeria.”

He noted Taiwan’s capability to develop industries crucial to Nigeria’s economy.

“Nigeria has natural resources, Taiwan doesn’t have any, but has the technical know-how to develop those natural resources for the socioeconomic development of both countries.

“Taiwan would help Nigeria in developing its agriculture, natural minerals, and energy industries. Taiwan has done it with Australia for about 20 years now,” he added.

He also recalled Tinubu’s campaign promise, where he vowed to make South East the Taiwan of Africa, adding that his country was ready to bring this to fruition.

Liu said, “While campaigning somewhere before the 2023 elections, President Tinubu declared that he would make South-East Nigeria the Taiwan of Africa. We are ready to offer assistance to fulfil this and other agenda of the president.

“Taiwan can be more than a valuable partner for both Nigeria and Africa, because Taiwan plays a significant role in the global economy, democracy, science & technology, social development, and serves as a true model of “Non-Oil Economy” We, therefore urge the Nigerian Federal or State Governments to take up trend of collaborating with Taiwan to upgrade and deepen our bi-lateral relations shortly.”

Highlighting the long-standing trade relationship between Taiwan and Nigeria, Liu underscored the importance of attracting more Taiwanese investments to Nigeria.

He said,“ The quality of our products has been deeply trusted and has received good comments from Nigerian traders and industrial companies. So the most important thing for the government is to attract more Taiwanese companies to come to Nigeria to do trading and investment. Nigeria and Taiwan must renew the agreement of protection of investment.”
