EPL: MADDISON’S GOAL SECURES 1-0 WIN FOR TOTTENHAM AGAINST STRUGGLING MAN UTD

Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

After beating Brentford two weeks ago to end a seven-game winless run, Spurs earned their first victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since early November on Sunday.

They had to survive a flurry of early chances, with the returning Guglielmo Vicario denying Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho with an early double save.

James Maddison then got the all-important goal just minutes later, turning in the rebound after Lucas Bergvall’s shot was parried by Andre Onana.

Garnacho squandered a glorious chance shortly afterwards, blazing over under no pressure, while Vicario denied him twice with smart saves in the second half.

United were unable to find an equaliser despite applying plenty of pressure, while Mathys Tel’s attempts to get a goal on his Premier League debut were thwarted by Onana.

The hosts move up to 12th in the table on 30 points, leapfrogging United, who sit one point and three places below them.

Data Debrief: Playing favourites

Ange Postecoglou has never lost to United in the Premier League, extending his unbeaten streak over the Red Devils to four matches in the competition.

It was a win for him too; Tottenham have won back-to-back Premier League games (v Brentford and Man Utd) for just the second time this season (also in September v Brentford and United).

Spurs are the first side to win three separate games against United in a single season in all competitions since Chelsea in 2012-13 while completing a league double over them for the first time since 1989-90.

Ruben Amorim’s problems continue to mount though, with his side losing eight of their last 12 Premier League games (W3 D1) with only the bottom two of Leicester City (nine) and Southampton (10) losing more games in that period.
