
“I DRINK TO THE FUTURE” – HIGH CHIEF GABRIEL AKIN-DEKO’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY LAUNCHED IN GRAND CEREMONY IN LAGOS

The highly anticipated autobiography I Drink to the Future, written by the revered High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko, was officially launched on February 19, 2025, at the Queen’s Park Event Center in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event, which is a collaborative effort between the Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) and the family of the late High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko, was graced by distinguished personalities from various works of life.
The launch ceremony, under the distinguished chairmanship of Chief Pius Akinyelure, brought together a gathering of notable figures, dignitaries, families and friends who came to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Nigeria’s most respected elders.
The event also saw the presence of the guest of honor, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, ably represented by Dr. Anthony A. Omolola, as well as the book reviewer, Dr. Femi Okurounmu, and the special guest, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), amongst others.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from the compere, Mr. Adeyanju Adegbite who introduced the various speakers and highlighted the significance of the occasion.
Attendees were then treated to a captivating video interlude by Dr. Christopher Kolade, Dr. Akinwunmi Adeshina and Former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In his Welcome Speech, President GCIOBA, Wale Babalakin, celebrated the commitments to the cause as he commended the High Chief’s Children for bringing this big dream to a reality. He mentioned that although, Akin-Deko already wrote his autobiography but was unable to publish before his death. This move by his children according to him, is a testament that there’s still hope for a better future.
While giving his speech, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Chairman, Board of Directors NNPCL, expressed admiration for High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko’s remarkable contributions to society, noting that the autobiography serves as an invaluable source of wisdom for present and future generations.
“This book is a window into the life of a man who has shaped the course of history in our country, and it is an honor to be part of this event,” said Akinyelure.
He urged everyone to support the book launch while recommending it to all.
Meanwhile, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, praised the late High Chief’s dedication to his community and his profound impact on governance and leadership. “High Chief Akin-Deko’s life is a testament to the power of perseverance, integrity, and service.
“This autobiography is not just a record of his life but a blueprint for anyone aspiring to contribute meaningfully to society.” It is a book that is highly recommended for younger generation.”
The Governor however, advised the children to continue to keep the Akin-Deko name shinning.
Dr. Femi Okurounmu, in his capacity as the book’s reviewer, delved into the core themes of I Drink to the Future, highlighting the author’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a distinguished leader.
Dr. Okurounmu, who reviewed the book for about 30-minutes, praised the book for its candid insights and inspiring lessons on leadership, resilience, and social responsibility.
“This is more than just an autobiography; it is a call to action for all of us to live purposeful and principled lives,” he said.
The special guest, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, who has long admired the late High Chief’s legacy, delivered a stirring speech about the enduring impact of High Chief Akin-Deko on Nigeria’s growth and development.
“We are all indebted to High Chief Akin-Deko for his vision and selfless service. His autobiography is a powerful reminder of the value of integrity, commitment, and love for one’s country,” said Adesina.
Akin-Deko’s Daughter, Modupe Akin-Deko Owolabi, explained that the event had been in the making for a very long time and she’s happy that the day has finally come.
She said, “My father had written the book and has been dead now for 38-years, but the children had been trying to finally put it together, and because, some of the information in it is very pertinent to Government College. We partnered with Government College because of the information in it and because, the proceeds will be for the new GCI like private school that they are also being involved in.”
“So, we are really very happy that everything fell in place. In terms of one honoring dad, letting his hard work in terms of the book he had written and let people also see the side of history from his own eyes.”
“I think the book is going to have a number of impacts on readers. For one, it gives you an insight into some of the things I believe we have lost. W have lost some of the values that was put in us but which unfortunately, we have lost and that’s part of the reason why our political systems isn’t working very much.”
“So, it sort of remind people about some of those values and principles, to be a principled person,” She concluded.
As part of the celebrations, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the family of the late High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko, many of whom shared fond memories and reflections on his character and influence. The event also featured a lively launch biding session, where copies of I Drink to the Future were bided for by launchers.
The launch event concluded with a toast to the future, symbolizing High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko’s enduring legacy and the hope that his story would continue to inspire generations to come.
“I Drink to the Future” is now available for purchase. The book offers readers a rare glimpse into the life of a man who has truly earned his place in Nigeria’s history and helping to remember our values and principles.
High Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko, a revered statesman, scholar, and advocate for progress, remained committed to Nigeria’s advancement until his passing in 1987. His legacy continues to inspire generations, reflecting a lifetime dedicated to service, innovation, and nation-building.
Born in 1913, High Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Akin-Deko was a visionary leader and a distinguished achiever whose legacy spans education, agriculture, sports, and governance.
His lifelong connection with Government College, Ibadan—first as a student, then as a teacher, later as president of the Old Boys Association, and ultimately as a life patron—helped shape his disciplined and principled character, which became the hallmark of his career.
Akin-Deko’s political and administrative career saw him serve as Chairman of the Idanre District Council where he built the steps into the hill. He is still renown today for helping to ensure Water and Electricity reached Idanre ahead of larger towns like Akure and Ondo.
He won elections under Action Group and took the portfolio of Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, in the AG-controlled Western Region of Nigeria Government.
He protected produce prices and developed the portfolio to become the region’s top ministry. Akin-Deko also, worked with overseas contacts to launch the revolutionary Farm Settlement Scheme.
He supervised Agriculture at the federal level at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Nigeria and became the first African Chairman of the International Cocoa Organization where he led the way to prevent excessive price fluctuations in the Cocoa market.
Beyond agriculture, Akin-Deko played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s sports landscape. He was the founding chairman of the National Sports Commission, laying the groundwork for the development of sports administration in the country. His influence also extended internationally, as he became the first African representative in the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where he advocated for sustainable agricultural policies and food security in developing nations.
His contributions to academia were equally notable. At various points in his career, Akin-Deko was appointed Pro-Chancellor of both the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), where he championed educational excellence and institutional development.
