FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LOKOJA SHUTS DOWN INDEFINITELY AS STUDENTS PROTEST DEATHS OF PEERS
The Federal University Lokoja has been closed indefinitely due to ongoing student protests following the tragic deaths of several of their peers.
The protests began on Monday after a trailer collided with the university’s shuttle bus, resulting in the deaths of seven people at the scene.
The closure of the university was announced in a circular (Ref. Number FUL/R/GEN/REGC/03) issued on Thursday by Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council. Copies of the circular were sent to the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kogi State.
The circular confirmed that five students were killed in the accident at Felele city center on Monday, February 17, 2025. Despite efforts by the Kogi State Government and appeals from university management for calm, students continued to block the university gates.
To prevent further escalation and potential loss of life, the Vice-Chancellor, after consulting with the management and security agencies, ordered the immediate closure of both campuses.
Students were directed to vacate the premises by 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025, with strict adherence to the directive.
