WORLD NEWS: US DEPORTS 135 MIGRANTS TO COSTA RICA
The Costa Rican government said Thursday that 135 migrants of different nationalities, including 65 youngsters, were deported to Costa Rica by the United States.
According to an AFP reporter, their plane took off from San Diego, California, and landed at a facility close to Juan Santamaria International Airport.
The deportees were transported by bus from the capital, San Jose, to a migrant centre around 360 kilometres (224 miles) away, close to the Panamanian border. They will be returned to their countries of origin.
According to deputy interior minister Omer Badilla of Costa Rica, all 65 of the youngsters on the trip were escorted by a family member, and none of them had a criminal history.
The group of migrants included individuals from Afghanistan, China, Iran, Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Vietnam, Jordan, Kazakhstan, and Ghana.
Costa Rica, Panama, and Guatemala have all agreed to receive migrants from other countries expelled by the United States and hold them until they are sent to their home nations or other host countries.
Last week, 299 deported migrants landed in Panama, with a group of about 100 transferred to the San Vicente refugee camp in Meteti, in the jungle province of Darien.
