….Calls for Synergy Between Sports Commission, Ministry of Basic Education

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu has emphasised the significance of school sports as the bedrock of sustainable sports development.

He said, “There is no better incubation ground, sports identification, and recognition platform than a well-managed and coordinated school environment. We understand the importance of these extracurricular activities in shaping students’ future and making them well-rounded individuals.”

Fatodu highlighted the need for synergy between the LSSC and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, noting that a collaborative relationship would enhance knowledge-sharing and create better opportunities for young and budding talents in schools.

Speaking further during a courtesy visit alongside the management team to the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja,

Fatodu emphasised that sports and education can progress simultaneously, allowing students to acquire skills related to sports. 

He pointed out that key elements in the sports ecosystem should be leveraged to create opportunities for student-athletes to continue honing their skills.

The LSSC boss stressed that strengthening this partnership would help restore the glory days of school sports as part of a strategic intervention to build a more sustainable community, providing students with multiple career pathways across different disciplines.

In his remarks, Commissioner Jamiu Ali-Balogun described sports as a viable career path for students, offering them better opportunities for future success. He emphasised that to effectively nurture talent in schools, the Ministry and the Sports Commission must collaborate to accelerate sustainable development through co-curricular activities.
