EDUCATION: KADUNA VARSITY LECTURERS SUSPEND STRIKE ACTION
The strike that the Kaduna State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) started a few days ago has been suspended.
Due to several outstanding disputes with the university’s management that date back to 2009 and 2017, the union started an indefinite strike on Tuesday.
However, after Senator Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, intervened, the strike was called off on Sunday.
Dr. Peter Adamu, the chairman of the ASUU branch at Kaduna State University, stated in a statement that the state government showed goodwill in ending the standoff by promptly releasing funds to pay the SIWES supervision allowance for dive sessions and 60% of September 2017 withholding salaries.
He added that a five-month payment schedule for withholding salary, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, pension remittance from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life insurance has been agreed to by the Kaduna State Government.
It added that the government has demonstrated its commitment to implementing wage awards and giving Kaduna State University autonomy.
As a result, the union praised Governor Sani for his prompt action and guidance in resolving the problems that sparked the strike.
ASUU claims that the governor’s move represents a change from the gloomy past, when members suffered as a result of taking part in legitimate strike activities.
