MERANDA MAY STEP DOWN AS LAGOS ASSEMBLY SPEAKER, SETONJI OR RAUF POISED TO TAKE OVER
Princess Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, may resign, making room for Mr. David Setonji or Mr. Wale Rauf to take over.
Prominent political figures, such as former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, former APC National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Chief Bisi Akande, and Chief Pius Akinyelure, Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, have intervened in this development.
Following the dismissal of Mudashiru Obasa, who was accused of corruption, abuse of power, and haughtiness, Meranda became the first female Speaker of the House on January 13. Obasa has since filed a legal challenge against his dismissal, claiming that due process was not adhered to.
According to sources, important political personalities met with House members and principal officers for the first time over the weekend, and another meeting is anticipated shortly.
One of the two members from Lagos West, Wale Rauf (Amuwo Odofin 2) or David Setonji (Badagry 2), is thought to be the future Speaker, while Meranda might be asked to return to her previous role as Deputy Speaker.
David Setonji has been a member of the House since 2015 and is now the Chief Whip.
Since 2019, Wale Rauf has served in the House.
Regional representation in state leadership is said to have an impact on this system. Lagos West now lacks a senior leadership role since Speaker Mojisola Meranda and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu are both from Lagos Central. Stakeholders have suggested that the next Speaker be selected from Lagos West, where Obasa comes from.
On Monday, February 17, 36 out of 40 parliamentarians affirmed their support for Meranda’s ongoing leadership by passing a vote of confidence in her, notwithstanding these developments. The House did, however, delay its session indefinitely to allow for additional discussions.
