An unidentified driver has struck and killed a 12-year-old girl and injured her 15-year-old sister while speeding on the BRT lane of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The tragic incident took place on Monday at the Ogundare bus stop, according to a statement from the Lagos State Police Command, issued on Tuesday by spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin.
“On Monday, February 24, 2025, at about 3:35 pm, a yet-to-be-identified driver, while plying the BRT lane at high speed at Ogundare bus stop along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, hit two female pedestrians, siblings aged 12 and 15, on their way back from school,” the statement read.
Hundeyin stated that the victims suffered serious injuries and were quickly taken to Orile-Agege General Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the 12-year-old girl passed away from her injuries, while her 15-year-old sister was transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital for additional care.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident and called on drivers to strictly follow traffic rules, speed limits, and safe driving habits.
“The Commissioner of Police commiserates with the bereaved family and assures that the police will ensure a speedy and conclusive investigation to bring the culprit to justice,” the statement added.
