A’IBOM COMMUNITY GRIEVES 19-YEAR POWER OUTAGE
Residents of Ikot Nte village, where Nigerian international football player William Troost-Ekong hails from, have expressed their displeasure over a protracted power outage that has left the area without electricity for almost 20 years.
The village, which is in Akwa Ibom State’s Etinan Local Government Area, has been without electricity for 19 years, which has severely hampered social and commercial activity, Chief Joshua Amos, the village head, told reporters on Tuesday.
“This is the 19th year we have been without power, and it appears that the Akwa Ibom State government is indifferent to our plight,” Amos lamented.
He pointed out that Ikot Nte had only had electricity for two months before the supply was completely cut off. Ikot Nte also produced Ufot Ekong, who is well-known for his academic achievements in Japan and two patents in the development of electric cars.
Beyond the power outage, the village chief emphasized other urgent problems, such as the appalling state of the Ikot Obio Eka-Ikot Ibok-Ikot Nte-Mbioto Road, which leads to the General Hospital in Mbioto, and the deteriorated state of the buildings and staff quarters at the Community Secondary School in Ikot Nte.
To lessen the suffering of the community, he did, however, commend the diasporic Ikot Nte indigenous people’s intervention, especially that of the Ikot Nte USA World Forum, which has provided funding for vital improvements like road grading, solar-powered streetlights, and borehole water facilities.
“Our sons and daughters abroad have made it possible for us to live with some dignity. They have continued to support us despite the government’s neglect, and we will keep praying for them,” he said.
Jonathan Abasiubong, a coordinator for a community project, attributed the blackout on the community’s transformer malfunctioning soon after it was put into service on February 24, 2006, by former Governor Victor Attah.
