BREAKING: NIGERIAN POLICE USE TEAR GAS TO DISPERSE PRO-NATASHA PROTESTERS AT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, were scattered by Nigeria Police Force operations as they tried to enter the National Assembly Complex.

The protesters reportedly assembled at the assembly entrance as early as 8:00 am, which was also the time of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions’ scheduled hearing and the start of plenary.

Police, however, used tear gas to scatter the gathering, claiming that it was necessary to avoid a possible breakdown of law and order.

According to reports, the demonstrators have since moved to Abuja’s Unity Fountain to carry on their protest.

The demonstration coincides with escalating tensions after Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio clashed over Senate chamber seating arrangements on February 20, 2025. She was referred to the Senate’s ethics committee as a result of the disagreement.

Public attention has been heightened by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusation last Friday that Akpabio was harassing her sexually and that she was singled out because she turned down his advances.
