SOUTH KOREAN COURT CANCELS ARREST OF IMPEACHED PRESIDENT YOON SUK YEOL
A South Korean court on Friday canceled the arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, allowing for his release.
The suspended president’s legal team had filed a request to cancel his arrest last month, arguing that his detention was unlawful due to the prosecution’s delay in filing charges against him.
“It is reasonable to conclude that the indictment was filed after the defendant’s detention period had expired,” stated a document from the Seoul Central District Court.

“To ensure procedural clarity and eliminate any doubts regarding the legality of the investigative process, it would be appropriate to issue a decision to cancel the detention,” the court added.
Yoon, a former prosecutor, caused a political crisis in South Korea last December when he briefly suspended civilian rule and sent soldiers into parliament.
He faces charges of insurrection for declaring martial law, which lawmakers swiftly voted down before proceeding with his impeachment.
The 64-year-old resisted arrest for two weeks in a tense standoff between his security team and investigators at his official residence in Seoul, but was eventually taken into custody on January 15.
Yoon also faces an impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether his removal from office will be upheld.
