BENUE POLICE ARREST TWO SUSPECTS OVER LOCAL GOVT CHAOS
The council secretariat, the chief’s palace, and other homes in Naka Town were set on fire during a violent demonstration in the Gwer-East Local Government Area, which resulted in the arrest of two individuals by the Benue Police Command.
Don’t forget that after armed intruders killed three members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards on Monday night, a violent protest broke out in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West LGA, on Tuesday.
The Benue Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, CSP, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.
On March 11, 2025, at around 9 a.m., she claimed, a report from the Naka Police Division said that the protest started after three young people were allegedly killed by suspected armed intruders.
In response, Anene stated, the Governor’s Security Adviser, Col. Alexander Ashongu (rtd), and the Commissioner of Police, CP Steve Yabanet, quickly traveled to the scene to evaluate the situation with the help of security agency chiefs.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was gathered that some suspected herders had attacked and killed three youths in the area.
“Consequently, the youths mobilised themselves for a protest that eventually became violent and led to the destruction of the local government secretariat, Ter Nagi’s palace and properties of other prominent sons of Gwer-west.
“The increased presence of police teams assisted the division to put the situation under control. Two ring leaders of the youth were arrested and investigation is ongoing,” she stated.
She offered the families of the deceased her condolences.
According to Anene, the CP, Yabanet, promised the locals that those responsible for the violence would be held accountable and denounced the murders as well as the ensuing property damage.
