To voice their concerns about the judiciary crisis in Benue State, demonstrators peacefully marched Monday from the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to the Supreme Court.

The demonstrators, who included human rights organizations, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens, held banners denouncing the alleged political takeover of the Benue Local Government Election Tribunal and urged Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to step in immediately to resolve the issue and remove dishonest judges from the country’s judiciary.

They also urged President Bola Tinubu to take quick steps to address the problem and guarantee that justice is done.

“Today, we are here as concerned Nigerians who believe in the rule of law. Our democracy is in clear danger, and the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Eku, must save it,” the convener of the group, Igwe Ude-Umanta, told journalists.

“We also call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to fold his arm and watch the judiciary go down.

“The Benue situation is the worst at the moment because the petitioners did not even participate in any of the process of the election,” he added.

Remember that Justice Maurice Ikpembese, the Chief Judge of Benue State, had previously ordered the tribunal to be moved from Makurdi to Nigeria Bar Association House in Abuja because of insecurity.
However, a Federal High Court in Makurdi issued a restraining order, directing that the election petition tribunal be held in Benue State in defiance of Justice Ikpembese’s decision.
The panel’s meeting was scheduled to begin in Abuja on March 10 but was postponed because of the restraining order.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress petitioned the FCT High Court in Abuja to move the panel to Abuja as the Benue Chief Judge had previously ordered.
The court granted the petition on Friday and ordered the tribunal to continue holding its sessions at the NBA House in Abuja, while also prohibiting the tribunal from holding sessions in Benue State.
