TWO PDP REPS DEFECT TO APC

Two members of the Peoples Democratic Party were defeated by the ruling All Progressives Congress in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Adamu Tanko, who represents Suleja/Tara/Gurara Federal Constituency in Niger State, and Husseini Jallo, who represents Igabi Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, cited the PDP’s “perennial crisis” as the cause of their defection.

Jallo claimed in a letter read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary that his capacity to adequately represent his constituents had been hampered by the opposition party’s ongoing turmoil.

“Mr Speaker, your leadership style and my belief in the principle of national unity was taken into consideration while taking this decision,” he said, stressing that he found the APC as an attractive platform to further his political career in the service of his constituency.

After Amos Magaji left the PDP in recent weeks, Jallo is the second Kaduna senator to desert.

In a similar vein, Tanko claimed that his choice was the result of thorough discussions with local political figures.

The House’s opposition members will keep calling for the seats of those who left their sponsoring political party for another platform to be declared vacant, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda stated while bringing up a point of order.

He called attention to the Supreme Court’s ruling that a member’s defection must be comprehensive, and he said that the House does not have any evidence that the members have acted appropriately or carried out their defection.

The two members should revoke their letters of defection or face legal action, according to Deputy Minority Leader Ali Isa, who stated that the defection problem must be treated seriously.

“The PDP remains very strong both as a party as well as an opposition,” he said, adding that “there is no crisis in the PDP.

“The defecting members must take the part of honour by resigning their position and go back to their people to face a fresh election,” he added.
