WAEC DISPUTES NASU’S CLAIMS OF VICTIMISATION
The West African Examinations Council has refuted claims of victimization and violation of a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment’s Non-Academic Staff Union.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Moyosola Adesina, the interim head of public affairs, WAEC referred to the charges as unfounded and reaffirmed its dedication to justice, equity, and adherence to the law.
The statement was issued in reaction to media reports that accused the council of breaking a deal agreed on March 10, 2025, to reintroduce staff check-off dues.
WAEC emphasizes that the deduction of staff check-off dues will be reintroduced by March 2025 as agreed upon, stating that there has been no departure from the agreements reached under the Memorandum of Understanding.
“For the avoidance of doubt, regarding the issue raised about the unilateral suspension of union activities in the Council, it was agreed by both parties that the Management of the Council had never done anything to put up any action to suspend trade union activities in the Council,” the statement read.
In response to allegations that NASU members were not acknowledged in its branch offices, WAEC insisted that NASU was recognized as a Trade Unions Act-registered trade union.
In response to claims of abuse and threats of moving NASU executives across the nation, the Council said that staff transfers are a natural element of professional growth and are detailed in the Conditions of Service handbook that is given to all new hires.
“The transfer of staff is aimed at career progression and for staff to gain more experience, inner-working, and knowledge on the job. It is not intended to target or victimise union members,” WAEC stated.
The Council promised that it had no plans to infringe on the rights of its workers or take any actions that would jeopardize union representation.
“WAEC is a law-abiding organisation that values human rights to the highest degree and will never disregard the rights of its employees. Our commitment to justice and integrity is unwavering,” Adesina affirmed.
