The escalating violence against women in Nigeria continues as the Lagos State Police Command announces the arrest of Mr. Peter Dike, accused of brutally murdering his wife at their residence in the Oke-Ira Ilogbo Eremi Community, Marogbo.

According to the police, Dike allegedly stabbed his wife to death with a kitchen knife during a heated argument that turned violent in their apartment on Wednesday. The command disclosed the arrest on Thursday.

This tragic case adds to the growing number of domestic violence incidents resulting in the deaths of women.

In a similar incident in October 2024, Motunrayo Olaniyi was arrested for fatally stabbing his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, during an argument at the Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, in the Ikorodu area.

Disclosing the details of Wednesday’s incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that detectives from the Morogbo Division were alerted and promptly arrived at the scene.

Hundeyin stated, “The case is confirmed. After a team of detectives who were on surveillance township monitoring patrol in the area got the information, they moved in swiftly and arrested the suspect. One kitchen knife stained with blood was recovered from him. He was brought down to the station and interrogated accordingly.

“He confessed to the crime. The corpse was deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Badagry. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti Yaba.”

In January, reports indicated that at least 133 Nigerian women, including teenagers, were victims of suspected gender-related violence between January 1 and December 31, 2024, according to the 2024 femicide report by DOHS Cares Foundation.

The data was obtained from the foundation’s tracker dashboard, which monitors femicide cases.

DOHS Cares Foundation is a non-governmental organization committed to combating gender-based violence and documenting such incidents.
