ONE DEAD, 29 INJURED IN AWKA ROAD ACCIDENT
At least 30 members of the Knights of the Catholic Church, traveling on a Coastal bus owned by the Cross River State College of Nursing in Ogoja, were involved in an accident.
The incident resulted in the death of 70-year-old Elliot Ushie Agana from Ogoja and left 29 others injured. The accident took place near the UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction in Awka.
Reports indicate that the coaster bus, carrying the Catholic Church members, had departed from Ogoja in Cross River State, heading to Abatete in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State for the burial of one of their members, Dr. Ezigbo Sunny.
One of the survivors, Pastor Christian Ikere, shared that they noticed the coaster bus was experiencing brake issues while leaving Ogoja for Anambra. Despite their requests to the driver to address the problem, he ignored them.
Another passenger, Mr. Chidiebere Chukwu, stated that one of the three coaster buses lost control and was signaling to other vehicles to clear the road to prevent an accident.
However, upon reaching the UNIZIK junction, the bus collided with an inter-city commercial vehicle that was loading along the road, leading to the accident.
The body of the deceased has been taken to a morgue, while the 29 injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku, Awka.
