DELTA NURSING STUDENT FACES SANCTION OVER VIRAL VIDEO ‘NA YOUR MAMA’

Osato Edobor, a student nurse at Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, has been subject to a disciplinary inquiry for reportedly filming and sharing an “unauthorized” video on social media during Nigeria’s First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Delta State.

On Friday, Arise News journalist Oseni Rufai shared a photo of a letter that was received by Edobor via X.

On March 27, 2025, Edobor was accused of doing a “malicious act” after she recorded herself singing and posted a “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s entrance at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba. The letter was signed by Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, the institution’s provost.

The event was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits were distributed to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone.

“This is a punishable offence as enshrined in the Student Handbook under standardised disciplinary action for some punishable offences No. 8, Page 21,” the letter stated.

Edobor was given a 24-hour deadline by the school to provide a written justification in triplicate explaining why she shouldn’t face disciplinary action. The disciplinary action comes after a social media video went viral showing nursing students at the occasion seemingly rejecting the First Lady as their “mother.”The incident happened when Oluremi Tinubu was presented by the event’s master of ceremonies as “everyone’s mother,” which is a moniker that first ladies in Nigeria are traditionally given. Nevertheless, the pupils unanimously replied, “Na your mama be this,” which translates to “This is your mother,” rejecting the title.

The video has since sparked widespread reactions, with many linking the students’ reaction to growing discontent over the economic hardship and insecurity in the country under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Rising inflation, food scarcity, and high living costs have fueled frustration among Nigerians, particularly the youth.

During the event, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised the First Lady’s efforts, stating that the country was witnessing significant improvements in the health sector under the RHI programme.

He also commended her dedication to enhancing the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The First Lady also met with traditional rulers at the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, including the Orodje of Okpe, and retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.
