UPDATE: FUBARA’S CHIEF OF STAFF DRAGS FORMER RIVERS HoS TO COURT FOR LIBEL
Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, on Sunday, disclosed that he had instructed his lawyer to sue the former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, over claims that they orchestrated the attack on the House of Assembly Complex.
Ehie, who was the former Assembly leader before his appointment, made the statement when he was featured as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
He was reacting to an earlier claim by Nwaeke that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to him by the governor to allegedly burn down the Assembly Complex along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
He said, “I will not join issues completely with George Nwaeke because I had already instructed my lawyer to file issues of criminal libel against him and I hope he is very prepared to come and substantiate his claim and his allegations if it were.
“Mind you, I am not holding brief for my principal in this interview. But it’s very important to clarify that I had no hand nor was I a part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of October 30, 2023, to hear of it.
“It is unfortunate that George Nweke, to satisfy his hunger or emergency reaches at his age having served for over 35 years, can be bullied into making such allegations. To note that the world has seen that he was not speaking from his right frame of mind, moment after his interview, we watched where his wife, who supposedly should be the closest person to him, was interviewed crying and mentioning names in that video.”
Florence, in an emotional interview on Friday, expressed deep concern over her husband’s whereabouts following his resignation.
However, her fears grew after seeing an online interview with him, which she found suspicious.
Nwaeke had, however, denied claims by his wife, Florence, that he was kidnapped.
The ex-Rivers head of service stated that contrary to her assertion, he is safe in Abuja where he had gone to voluntarily report himself to security agencies over developments in Rivers State.
In a video released in the early hours of Saturday, Nwaeke dismissed his wife’s claim as false, suggesting that she had been misled and given a script to read.
But Ehie insisted that such utterances couldn’t be coming from a mind in his right senses,
When quizzed if Nwaeke was truly privy to some political discussions and maneuvering with his principal, Fubara’s chief of staff debunked it, saying there was nothing of the sort.
He said, “That is not true. Nwaeke had no political or intimate relationship with us, the governor of Rivers State elected nor myself. You know that Nwaeke was a civil servant and his responsibilities are clearly outlined. As head of service, the closest he got to the governor was at the executive council meeting.
“And if he has something that he wanted to relay to the governor, which ‘relates to civil servant’, he needs to seek an appointment with the governor and be cleared by the DSS in charge of security in government. George Nwaeke and myself, nor the governor, had never had any meeting, jointly or separately at all. Not to talk of something as far-reaching as political discussions.
“He is not a politician. Nwaeke does not even partake in critical local government political discussions. He has never been part of us politically. So at what point are we going to sit down with George Nwaeke to discuss issues? They just needed somebody who has the same level of hierarchy in government to score cheap and unfair political points.”
