Under the Office of the Head of Civil Service, the Akwa Ibom State Government has authorized the creation of a Department of Occupational Safety within the public sector, to be led by a Permanent Secretary.

Governor Umo Eno presided at the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, where the consent was given.

The council also ordered Sterling Global to stop additional encroachment and closing of waterways in the state, according to a statement issued Thursday by Hon. Aniekan Umanah, the Commissioner for Information.

Oil-bearing towns, especially those in the company’s operational area, complained, and the decision was made.

The Executive Council reportedly adopted the following resolutions following a consideration of numerous memoranda and discussions: The Akwa Ibom State Infrastructure and Asset Management and Maintenance Agency will henceforth be under the direction of the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, the council agreed.

The purpose of this choice is to improve the efficacy and efficiency of the agency’s activities.

The council authorized the creation of the Department of Occupational Safety inside the Akwa Ibom State Public Service, based on a document that was given by the Head of Civil Service.

This comes after Establishment Circular No. 1 of 2024 was issued to domesticate the federal policy on Occupational Safety Officers Cadre in the public sector and the governor’s mandate to hire safety officers.

Sterling Global was instructed by the council to confine its activities within the 1,000 hectares of land that were initially allotted to them as well as the 700-hectare buffer zone.

The business must stop closing or encroaching on any more state waterways.

To guarantee adherence to legal requirements, the council directed the Ministry of Lands to evaluate the status of all prior approvals.

The government’s commitment to implementing regulations that safeguard the interests of impacted communities, public safety, and the integrity of land use was reiterated in the statement.
