The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that one person died and two others were injured in an accident on the Cele Expressway en route to Oshodi, Lagos.
In a statement released on Saturday, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated that the crash involved a fully-loaded 40-foot container truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles—a Toyota Camry and a Sienna minivan.
The incident resulted in the death of a pedestrian and left two individuals with various injuries.
“Preliminary findings from on-site investigations indicate that the heavy-duty truck, conveying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while traveling at an excessive speed.
“The resulting loss of control led to the dislodgement of the containers, which subsequently collapsed onto five commercial buses and a pair of private vehicles, causing significant structural damage and human casualties.
“One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures to both his arm and leg, while the remaining injured parties were promptly evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo medical facility for immediate and comprehensive treatment.
“Officers of LASTMA responded with commendable alacrity, orchestrating an efficient rescue operation in concert with the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps and sympathetic members of the public,” he said.
He noted that their swift response enabled the quick rescue of the injured and helped restore traffic on the severely impacted expressway.
Officers from the Ijesha-Tedo Police Division were also deployed to provide tactical support and maintain order during the operation.
Mr. Bakare-Oki extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery.
He further urged drivers to comply with speed limits and traffic rules to promote road safety.
